Do You Need A 35mm Camera?

Do I need my own camera for this class?

To have the best experience in this class, you should acquire your own 35mm SLR camera to use for the shooting assignments. There are many reasons, but the main reason is that you will learn faster and better when you become one with your own camera.

Am I required to have a camera?

You are not required to have a camera to pass this class, but you do need to use one and learn how to use it to properly capture images. For this reason we have several class cameras that students may check out to complete the assignments (see equipment check-out rules). But remember, the camera check-out is limited to availability on a first-come-first-served basis.

What kind of camera do I need?

When purchasing a used or new camera you need to consider/watch for the following details:

  • Camera Specs: 35mm film, SLR, manual setting for aperture and shutter speed
  • Does the camera come with a lens?
  • Does the camera work?
  • Where is the seller located? (overseas shipments will not arrive fast enough, choose a US seller)

REMEMBER: If you get a camera without manual settings (aperture and shutter speed), you will need to check out a school camera for a couple of assignments, but you could still use the automatic/point & shoot camera for other assignments.
